The street is adopted in honor the first governor of the city Joseph Mikhajlovich de-Ribas, which developed and was the first governor of the city. The street is not long and does not reach the sea, but despite the city planning, the people inhabitants have chosen Deribasovskaya as their main street. Potemkinskaya stairs. Prince Voroncov built the stairs for his wife Elisavete, at the cost of 800.000 rubles. The width of the stairs below, is almost twice from the upper part. The Potemkin stairs originally had 200 steps leading to the sea, but later on 8 steps were buried under the seaside road, which was built at a later stage. Although the stairs were built by Prince Voroncov, the stairs were named “Potemkin stairs”, following the film “An ironclad Potemkin”. The most beautiful part of Odessa is Fontanskaya. In 1902 in honor of the visit of king Nicolay II to France, the “Malofontanskuyu road” was renamed to “French boulevard”. On the “French boulevard” is located the oldest film studio in Ukraine, the Ophthalmological Institute, named V. P. Filatova AMN Ukraine, part of the Odessa National University named of I. I. Mechnikova. In the beginning of “French boulevard” is located the Theater of musical comedy, named "M. Vodaynogo". |
